If you completed a 2022-2023 FAFSA and reported that you had already completed your 2020 tax return (1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ), but did not use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool for either you or your parents, you may have already received or may receive an email from FAFSA asking you to return to your FAFSA and use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. This email is legitimate if it came from an "@cpsemail.ed.gov" address. You should complete the instructions in the email as soon as possible to avoid any delay in your application for financial aid.

The IRS Data Retrieval Tool reminder emails are only sent in December, February, April, May, June, July and August.
